Artist’s Statement
My photographs deal with perception and the notion of realism as a form of illusion. I am particularly interested in the themes of escapism and fantasy, via television, film, nostalgia for the past, and art and the celebrity. The work fluctuates between images that are "artificial" (staged sets and wax mannequins, art hotels) and "reality". The tension between the two creates a deeper psychological visual element. I have appropriated Hitchcock’s suspense and stylization in combination with images depicting isolation, obsession, and desire. The need to examine the extreme subtle details of the work and its source requires the audience to slow down the viewing process and confront their own perceptions of reality.
